SFL analysis: An investigation of students’ use of cohesive devices in exposition text

The 2013 Indonesian Curriculum stipulates that one of the students’ basic competencies in English subject is to produce an analytical exposition text. students are required write text persuasively and cohesively. These requirements make them consider composing such a as challenging task. This study investigated utilization cohesive devices writing texts examined their inaccurate uses. It attempted demonstrate underlying issues caused uses seek solutions. employed Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) six written by 11th grade Cimahi. They were collected using purposive sampling analyzed Halliday Hasan’s cohesion framework. revealed lexical served most frequently used followed reference conjunction. Inaccurate also found. Most conjunction misused, whilst repetition redundantly utilized. findings showed although skilful presenting relevant supporting arguments making personal, they still experienced confusion when utilizing devices. Therefore, teachers need equip with adequate knowledge concerning cohesiveness well provide more practice feedback improve skills
